In addition to helping prevent and treat varicose veins, compression stockings and socks also help prevent and manage spider veins.
Varicose veins may be caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins. After the arteries carry blood and nutrients through the body, veins then transport the blood from the body back to the heart. In your lower extremities, the leg muscles squeeze and push the blood back to the heart against the flow of gravity. The valves of veins function as one-way flaps to prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it travels up your legs. If these valves become weak, blood can leak back into the veins and pool there. Varicose veins occur when the collecting blood makes the veins bigger. Spider veins can also be caused by the backup of blood. However, they can also be due to hormone changes, exposure to the sun, and injuries.
In the United States, approximately 50-55% of women and 40-45% of men suffer from some sort of vein problem. Varicose veins affect as many as 50% of people 50 years old and older. Many factors may attribute to an increased risk of varicose or spider veins, such as increasing age, medical history, hormonal changes, pregnancy, obesity, lack of movement, and even sun exposure.
There are different solutions for treating these vein abnormalities, but one of the most affordable treatments is compression hose and socks, which may be found for purchase in local drugstores and online.
