Happy Valentine’s Day!

compression hoseAh, Valentine’s Day. A day to love, laugh, and look fabulous. Unfortunately, for many of you ladies out there, looking great means wearing heels in all their uncomfortable notoriety. Rest easy, though — below are some easy ways to make wearing heels downright bearable.

First off, break them in. Wearing brand-new heels out on a date or when you’re going to be walking a lot is a huge mistake — wear them around your house as you go about your daily activities first. This way, you’ll be able to take a break from them if need be.

Make sure they fit properly. This should be a given, but many women still buy shoes that are a size too big or too small. Often, it’s because they have a tricky foot size, and it doesn’t help that no one has feet that are the exact same size as each other. You’re better off going with a pair with one shoe that fits perfectly and one that’s a smidge too big — you can pad it with inserts.

Don’t go with a heel you can’t walk in. Be honest with yourself about this — I myself have bought a fair few 5-inch heels I convinced myself I’d be able to walk in, only to end up wobbling around like a newborn deer. You’re better off wearing lower heels anyway, but if you’re dead-set on going with stilettos, wear compression hose as well, to help with your circulation.

Wearing heels doesn’t have to be traumatic to your feet. Just make sure you wear them comfortably, or varicose vein stockings might not be able to help you later in life.
